2022 SAIF-CAFR Financial Research Summer Camp

Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance (SAIF) and China Academy of Financial Research (CAFR) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University are pleased to announce the Fifth SAIF-CAFR Financial Research Summer Camp, to be held on-line on July 9-10, 2022 (Beijing time, GMT+8).

Designed for emerging scholars in China and beyond, the SAIF-CAFR Financial Research Summer Camp introduces the participants to the frontiers of academic research in finance and provides them with cutting-edge research methodologies and fresh perspectives, with the objective of inspiring their future academic careers and enhancing the overall quality of research and teaching in finance in China. This year’s Summer Camp consists of lectures given by three renowned finance scholars. Listed in the alphabetical order, they are:

 

Mariassunta Giannetti
Professor of Finance, Stockholm School of Economics

Professor Giannetti has broad research interests in corporate finance and financial intermediation. She has published highly-cited research in leading journals in Finance, Economics, and Management, including the Journal of Political Economy, the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, the Review of Financial Studies, the American Economic Review, the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, the Review of Finance, and Management Science. Professor Giannetti has been serving as an associate editor of several journals, including the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, the Review of Financial Studies, the Review of Finance, the Journal of Corporate Finance, Financial Management, the Journal of Banking and Finance, the Journal of Financial Stability, and European Financial Management, and as a director of the European Finance Association, the Financial Intermediation Research Society, and the Financial Management Association. She is also an advisory board member of the Academic Female Finance Committee (AFFECT) of the American Finance Association.

Gordon Phillips
Laurence F. Whittemore Professor of Business Administration and Faculty Director of the Center for Private Equity and Venture Capital (CPEVC), Tuck School of Business.

Prof. Phillips’s areas of research include corporate finance, how financial decisions impact firms' strategic decisions, and contracting in financial markets. His work in corporate finance includes studies of private equity issuance, capital structure, Chapter 11 bankruptcy, how leverage buyouts and other forms of high debt influence a firms' and rivals' investment decisions. His research has been published in leading academic journals including the Review of Financial Studies, the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Management Science and other leading academic journals. He has served as an associate editor at the Review of Financial Studies and the Journal of Corporate Finance.

Xiaoyun Yu
Professor of Finance, Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance (SAIF), Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Professor Yu’s research interests are in the areas of theoretical and empirical corporate finance, with a focus on information economics, corporate governance, financial institutions, and political economy of finance. Her work has been published in leading academic journals including Journal of Finance, Journal of Business, Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Management Science, and other leading academic journals, and has won numerous research awards. She currently serves as an editor for the International Review of Finance, and as an associate editor for the Journal of Banking and Finance and the Journal of Empirical Finance. She is a research member of the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI).

Computational Linguistics, Big Data and Finance

Professor Gordon Phillips
Tuck School of Business

The lecture will introduce the growing area of using computational linguistics to analyze big data and text applied to both corporate finance and asset pricing. We will go over processing text from firm financial statements and patent text to build new industry classifications and show applications to Mergers, Computation Analysis, Stock Market Momentum, Cash Holdings and Innovation and Intellectual Property.

Trade Credit and Supply Chains

Professor Mariassunta Giannetti
Stockholm School of Economics

The lecture will review empirical and theoretical work on trade credit, how trade credit contributes to the transmission of monetary policy and the role of trade credit in fostering the stability of supply chains. I will also introduce a new measure of supply chain risk and its effects on the composition of supply chains and industrial structure.

Corporate Governance and Financial Misconduct

Professor Xiaoyun Yu
Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance (SAIF), Shanghai Jiao Tong University

This lecture provides a brief introduction to recent progress on corporate governance, with an emphasis on securities fraud. We will go over some theoretical models and review empirical evidence on: (1) determinants and detection of financial misconduct, (2) social and financial market consequences, and (3) corporate governance issues related to fraud and beyond. We will also discuss empirical tools and related challenges as well as potential directions for future research.
